Every week students will design and create an “Animutant”. Starting with an ordinary plastic animal, a vast assortment of found objects, and an abundance of imagination, students will repurpose materials to create these one of a kind animals.
Students will also make habitats for their creations. In the process of bringing to life the fantasy lands of “Animutania” they will experiment with materials and problem-solve its design and construction.
Please note students will be using hot glue guns specifically designed to be kid friendly and safe.
Elaine Woodhouse is a Found Object Artist, Visual Arts teacher and Artist in Residence with over 30 years teaching experience. Elaine received her degrees in Early Childhood Education and Social Work in the United Kingdom. Most recently she earned her certification as a Sign-Language Interpreter.

My class activities are process oriented rather than product driven. They aim to encourage creative confidence and intelligence. They support experimentation, individuality, risk taking and problem-solving. Each child is recognized as an individual and their work is not critiqued or expected to reflect the work of other students or my own.
When providing project samples that might be helpful in introducing as activity, every effort is made to provide a wide and diverse selection of work created by peers, as opposed to ones made by myself. Sometimes activities may be inspired by contemporary artists. These artists are chosen based on their relevance to the specific age group I am working with, their ability to excite and inspire based on the materials they use, and the subjects and techniques they employ.
Every effort is made to provide a relaxed and joyful environment. Comparison is discouraged. Individuality is encouraged. And the creative process is always supported and celebrated.

Originally from England, Elaine trained in Early Childhood Education, and Fine and Applied Art, before moving to the United States in 1982. Since then she has acquired over 20 years of teaching experience, including several years in the Head Start Program. The majority of her experience however has been providing after school art enrichment classes at Seattle Public Schools.
She has also been retained as an Artist in Residence,
Elaine’s interest in folk art led to authoring a book on metal repujado, and several television appearances. She is responsible for developing and popularizing metal embossing techniques and products in the crafting industry.
Elaine has also received certification as a social worker, specializing in child care. Most recently she completed training as a sign language interpreter.
“Traditionally, folk art was created by people who did not even have a word for art in their culture. Art was simply what people did. It was a part of being human. My classes foster this philosophy in a contemporary setting. Folk art often has a practical purpose or meets a specific need. Many of my classes utilize found objects and recycling, reflecting our society’s need to conserve and repurpose”
