Elaine Woodhouse (affectionately referred to at Bryant as MISS-ELAINE-EOUS because of the vast array of materials she incorporates into her art), is bringing her “Outside the Box” art activities after-school!!

Elaine has been an Artist-in-Residence educator, working with Bryant K-2 grade students for over a decade. Her teaching philosophy is rooted in Process oriented art experiences. It is about the creation of the work rather than the final product. It is the difference between art expression and imitation. It is Art as a verb!

Why are Process oriented art opportunities important for young children?  Children are encouraged to use exploration to discover new materials, techniques and tools in an open-ended way that encourages critical thinking, problem-solving and creative confidence.  Skills that can be applied in all areas of the curriculum (and life).

Week One. Collaborative Nature themed Mandala.  Elaine is excited to take advantage of the after-school format to offer students more interactive and collaborative art experiences, acknowledging the post pandemic social and emotional challenges many young children are now facing.

Glue guns may be used, but are designed specifically for young children.  Special features include rubber guard around tip, and low temperature.

Elaine_Woodhouse_300Originally from England, Elaine trained in Early Childhood Education, and Fine and Applied Art, before moving to the United States in 1982. Since then she has acquired over 20 years of teaching experience, including several years in the Head Start Program. The majority of her experience however has been providing after school art enrichment classes at Seattle Public Schools.

She has also been retained as an Artist in Residence,

Elaine’s interest in folk art led to authoring a book on metal repujado, and several television appearances. She is responsible for developing and popularizing metal embossing techniques and products in the crafting industry.

Elaine has also received certification as a social worker, specializing in child care. Most recently she completed training as a sign language interpreter.

“Traditionally, folk art was created by people who did not even have a word for art in their culture. Art was simply what people did. It was a part of being human. My classes foster this philosophy in a contemporary setting. Folk art often has a practical purpose or meets a specific need. Many of my classes utilize found objects and recycling, reflecting our society’s need to conserve and repurpose”
